Ever since you’ve been in school, there has been a plan for your life: go to kindergarten with the plan of going to the first grade, complete elementary with plans to go to middle school, from middle school to high school, high school to college, and college to……..? Plans stops when you complete your educational journey, or do they? Your K-12 experience is usually already set out for you based off your zip code, your decision making skills aren’t needed until you have to chose a college.
A problem millennials encounter is this post college life which contains a lot uncertainty. From the age of 5 to 22, your life is planned, but from 22-65 is a mystery. The same way you’re forced to make a decision on what college to go to, the same energy should be used in planning out your post-college. Here are a few tips on how to plan your life:
1. Macro and Micro Plan
a. Macro: look at decades (20s, 30s, 40s, etc.) and what you want to accomplish within that decade
b. Micro: look at the time within those decades, what do you want to complete on a year to year basis
2. Professionally and Personally Plan
a. Have a plan for your relationship(s).
b. Have a plan for your money.
c. Have a plan for your transportation/car.
d. Have a plan for your job.
e. Have a housing situation
3. Ask yourself why and what, A LOT!
a. Why do I want to go back to school? What will it do for me?
b. Why am I taking this position? What will I learn from this?
c. Why am dating this person? What value do the bring to me and vice versa?
d. What do I want from my 20s? What do I want from my 30s?
These basic questions can provide answers to some of your complex answers. I know personally, I plan to have all my schooling done by age 30, I plan to be credit card debt free in the Spring, and renting an apartment for 2-3 years. Once my macro plan is done of my 20s, I will plan on for my 30s and micro plan within.
Remember, poor preparation promotes poor performance!
