Every month, and occasionally multiple times per month, I travel for work and I am constantly reminded of how great the Detroit airport truly is. From the layout of gates to the amenities, there really is no better airport, in my opinion.

So what makes Detroit’s amenities that GREAT?

As mentioned, the layout of the terminal is very easy to navigate. I spend most of my time in the  McNamara terminal and it is designed as one straight line. Even numbered gates on one side and odd numbers on the other. After getting through security you really only have to decide if you need to go right or left and there are plenty of maps to help you out. There is also a tram to get you from one side of the airport to the other as the terminal is about 1 mile long. Personally, if I am realy early for my flight, I love to walk back and forth through the terminal.

Walking around has allowed me to check out all of the shops and restaurants the terminal has to offer. I love that there are multiple fast and sit-down meal options that are all easy to access. Additionally, I love that they give you a taste of DETROIT. There is a Leo’s Coney Island providing everyone’s favorite diner grub as well as Plum Market, where hot, cold, and packaged LOCAL snacks are ready to go! 

Finally, the “little” things that make a BIG difference. First, our airport is clean and the restrooms always appear to have just been washed. Second, there are water fountains with bottle filling stations every few gates. Reducing plastic use is a big deal for me so having a bottle filler goes a long way! 

So whether you travel once a week or once a year, I hope you start to notice all of the great things DTW has to offer!
