It’s official. Allison and I will be welcoming in the New Year here at Campus Martius in style- in about an hour. You may be surprised, but much like New York City, we actually have a “ball” of our own here in Detroit – The D – and it will drop at 12 tonight. These past few months living in Detroit have gone by quickly and have been filled with many fun adventures – with my Challenge Detroit fellows – and with Allison. This time last year we were living in Grand Rapids and enjoying our life there – unbeknownst to me of the epic 2015 adventure that was ahead of us here in Detroit.
Earlier this evening Allison and I ventured to BD’s Mongolian BBQ (in Dearborn) to claim our final $5 take out bowls from 2015. During my short time making my bowl I “made friends” with a few folks – all sharing their weekend plans – and each one was venturing to Detroit this holiday weekend for various reasons including for tonight’s New Year’s festivities in Campus Martius, tonight’s Wing’s game, and ice skating at the rink in Campus Martius. These past few months have been full and sometimes I begin to forget how blessed Allison and I are to live here in downtown Detroit. We really do live in an area full of action and it’s fun to be able to spontaneously catch a show, skate at Campus Martius, or just take an afternoon stroll around the city to admire the architecture. Anyone that knows me well – knows my love for architecture – and I feel inspired by all the beauty around me here in the city.
Seeing that today was a holiday from Mosher Dolan – I took a short walk to Bucharest Grill for a Chicken Shawarma for lunch and it was delicious. I you haven’t done so already, get yourself a taste at any of their three Detroit locations. Sadly, earlier today I read that Bucharest is moving out of their Foxtown location and into a new space on Jefferson. I’m sad to see them leave my walkable zone, but I plan to visit them in New Center, Corktown, or at their new location to be opened in 2016 on Jefferson.
It doesn’t seem right to close out 2016 without saying thank you to all of my friends following my journey, to Challenge Detroit leadership for making our Challenge experience such a special one, for my fellow fellows for teaching me more than I could ever teach them, and for those at Mosher Dolan for making my time there so incredible. Looking forward to sharing many more stories about my life here – making Detroit home. As I post this post, Allison is bundling up and we are ready to see the D drop in about an hour or so.
