I have found one of my favorite spots in Detroit – the lighthouse hidden on the beautiful Riverfront. This month the Challenge Detroit fellows have partnered with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy for their fifth challenge. On the second Friday of our challenge we took a short tour of part of the Riverfront and also explored the Dequindre Cut. After leaving that day I was excited to start exploring the Riverfront on my own.

This past weekend I had a morning to myself and decided to bike the Riverfront path. I started at Rivard Plaza and went West first and then circled back and went all the way East (almost to the Belle Isle Bridge). As I leisurely rode my bike East on the Riverfront I came across a lighthouse hidden away at Milliken State Park. I have always been in love with lighthouses and was happy to find one tucked away in the city. I parked my bike at the lighthouse and spent time soaking in the sunshine, watching the boats pass on the river and making small talk with the fishermen.

Detroit has so many unique elements to it, and the Detroit Riverfront is a prime example. To escape the sometimes busy downtown setting all I need to do is walk down to the river and I have beautiful parks and paths to explore. The Riverfront is already a big destination spot in the city, but it’s typically the Renaissance Center area. In the future I will definitely recommend people to explore beyond that area because there are so many great things to see!
