If you’re not using a smartphone I have only one suggestion…..ditch whatever it is you are using and get a smartphone ASAP!!! Since moving to this fabulous city, I’ve learned to navigate the streets of Detroit, budget, improve my time management, and improved my taste in music.  I’ve listed a few of my favorite apps to use while staying here in Detroit:

Google Maps- My personal favorite app! This app has really been a saving grace as I confidently navigate the streets of Detroit and the Greater Detroit Metro region during the weekends. During the past month, I utilized this app to get to respective locations. In areas that were unfamiliar to Downtown residents, this app helped with navigating through neighborhoods.

Available on: Android or iOS

UpTo– Since moving to Detroit, my social life went into hyper mode. Not only am I hip to events occurring locally but I can see what events my peers are heading to and join them! By the way, this company is based in Detroit!!! Hurry up and get connected to your pals! Stop scouring FB to find out what they are doing and productively figure out your moves for the night. This app helped with getting the word out about Challenge Detroit’s Kickoff Party!

Uber- Uber is now available in Detroit. Unless I’m in NYC, I avoid using a Taxi. Simply request a ride and get picked up in minutes; no reservation required. You can use the app to compare rates, pay with Google Wallet or a credit card, and check the progress of your driver on an interactive map. This is very useful after a night on the town in Detroit. Some areas aren’t the best to catch public transportation after a night on the town. I’m very dependent on the People Mover but if out of the downtown region, Uber is really a saving grace to return home. Gentleman, you will earn extra points from your lady friends if you arrange for a private driver to drive her to her next location. You will look like a boss at a very low cost. No seriously, you have the option to have a luxury sedan pick her up. I’m just saying.

WellsFargo (or Bank App of Choice)- Probably my least favorite app but very essential. By the way, the 1st of the month is my least favorite day of the month. Having a banking app is really helpful. The sweetest part about having this app is the mobile deposit! With a quick snap with my camera, funds are automatically deposited! How sweet is that! I don’t think I’ve been to a bank since I’ve reached Detroit. Also helpful for me because there are no Wells Fargo branches downtown. Great time-saving app.

Spotify- I’m now officially a Hip Hop/Pop/R&B Connoisseur. The app is actually a music player which can be played online.  This app allows me to listen to entire albums, music with the featured artist of my choice, or just a random John Legend single.  Yes, I love John Legend. By the way, he will be at Fox Theater Nov. 12. Select here for tickets.  For less than the cost of my ticket to see Mr. Legend you can pay for the unlimited monthly subscription. Multiple users can utilize your account, unfortunately, not at the same time. Find some music lover friends and split the subscription. Really worth the $9.99.
