New years resolution? Explore more. I’m slowly narrowing down areas around Detroit. The wild and elusive ways that people named these neighborhoods sparked my interest. We know as people move into Detroit they start ‘revitalizing’ certain areas around Detroit. And sometimes that means renaming places that have held a name for years prior. Such as Corktown, one of the oldest surviving neighborhoods in Detroit got its name from the Irish immigrants who settled there who were hailing from County Cork, Ireland. As I slowly learn the locations of these neighborhoods, I hope to learn not just the history of how they’re named but what the names mean to the people who live there.
