So I woke up this morning (I’ll spare you details on that one) and walked out into my living room to a view that I’m almost used to but am hoping to not take for granted. You see, I live on the 21st floor of a high-rise in the city that has floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s approximately a 100-degree view (yep, used a protractor) of north Detroit as well as Windsor with a peek to Belle Isle. That’s right, all you skinny-dippers (just kidding, that’s creepy). But seriously, Lafayette Park is a great place to live. In addition to the Towers in which I live, there’s a collection of townhouses and a couple other towers in the area designed by Mies van der Rohe – this is a big deal. Living here is not only quite breathtaking for the view, but it’s a pretty easy place to get by. Lafayette Foods is no more than a couple hundred feet from the apartment and is resplendent with food, very reasonably-priced eggs, and a solid beer selection. The same goes for Harbortown, another market down the road. One of the greatest things about the area, though, is the Dequindre Cut. It’s a trail that leads right to the Riverfront (and makes for a great run location) or to Eastern Market – another of Detroit’s gems. So, if you’re ever in the Lafayette area, try any of the restaurants in the Eastern Market area. Or Bai Mai Thai, in the strip mall at the foot of the Towers. And while you’re at it, drop by Lafayette Foods for the chocolate milk in the glass bottles – nothing short of glorious.
