Everyone has SOMETHING that makes them forget about everything and just live in the moment. Something that causes your body to go into autopilot so your brain can just relax and enjoy the ride. For my roommate, that something is soccer. For other Fellows, that something is basketball, swimming, gardening, yoga, walking with a pet, running marathons, etc.
For me, that something is DANCE!
6 years ago when the above photo was taken, I had been dancing since the age of 5 and only took one year off in order to do bumper bowling in 1st grade! Unfortunately, this was the last time that I would dance for 6 years while I completed Architecture school and started working. In those long 6 years, my body literally ached from missing dance. I felt like a part of me was missing. Stopping dance had created a void that neither living, working, playing, giving or leading could fill.
Until one fateful day, my fellow Fellow Sami asked if anyone wanted to go and see the Nutcracker with her at the Detroit Opera House. I jumped at the chance to see a show and was pleasantly surprised when I found an ad in the program for a local non-profit ballet studio called Ballet Renaissance. Not only was this studio in the Opera House, which is walking distance from my house, but the all levels Adult ballet class was taught by none other than my instructor from 6 years ago, Mrs Betty Mawhinney!!
A couple months later, I registered for the Spring ballet classes and I haven’t looked back!
Since then, that SOMETHING has came back. I get so excited looking forward to Wednesday night classes that it makes my weeks fly by.
2 performances down and I still can’t remember why I stopped dancing in the first place. If there is SOMETHING that makes you feel this alive, never let it go.
