If you would have told be 1 year ago that not only would I be a soccer fan, but I would also be a season ticket holder, I would tell you that you are crazy! Why? Because first of all, typically I am not a huge sports follower and secondly I know nothing about soccer beyond the basics: kick the ball in the net and don’t get a card.
Then one fateful afternoon some of my hardcore soccer friends said “Hey Corissa, do you want to go to the Detroit City Football Club (DCFC) semi-finals games? The tickets are pretty cheap and I’ve heard that the games are super fun and rowdy.” It was pretty hard for me to turn down cheap fun with friends, so I said what the heck!
On game day I was told that I had to wear “Le Rouge and Gold” and aside from that I should be all set. What no one told me was that I had to supply my own gas mask!
Detroit City FC
So before we go any further, here are some brief facts about DCFC
“Detroit City FC is a minor league soccer team that plays in the National Premier Soccer League’s Midwest Great Lakes Conference.
Founded in 2012, Detroit City FC has established itself as one of the most talked about soccer teams in North America and the grassroots embodiment of a resurgent city.
[In 2013] Detroit City FC were the Great Lakes regular season champions, the Rust Belt Derby trophy winners, and finished the regular season as the #1 ranked team in the 57 team NPSL.” – DCFC, About Us
Season Ticket Holder = Part of the DCFC Family
This year has been just as impressive, and Detroiters are starting to take note. Not only are they currently undefeated after their 5th game of the season, but there game attendance has been unprecedented. This season alone went from the home opener having around 1,500 people to the last home game which was sell out at 3,112 attendees!!
The best part is that this year I am an official season ticket holder, so I have been able to watch the entire thing happen! I have been there to see the fan section double in size. I was there to see the back to back goals that sent the entire stadium into an uproar. And I was there for the spine tingling never before done DF… FC… chant from across the stadium.
All this adds up to the fact that the DCFC family is growing, and I am happy to be a part of it. As I have mentioned before, being in Detroit is like being a part of a family, and the DCFC fan section is that crazy cousin that always takes you on ridiculous adventures, so you better grab a scarf and prepare yourself for an unpredictable ride!
