I wish I were writing about an upcoming event, but it actually happened in August of 1969.  I can’t find out much about it other than this article from the Detroit News. It’s more about Smokey Robinson than the event, but there’s some relevancy for today:

‘If you live here, you’ve gotta care, man.’ Says Smokey simply.

Although Smokey says Detroit is like the rest of the world, “a powder keg,” he eventually hopes to see Detroit become a model city.

That, he says, can happen if the people who really care about the future of Detroit get together to reach ALL the people, to let them know they CAN get ahead if they give a damn.

I Care About Detroit Day was so popular that the organizers said that Tiger Stadium would have been a better venue. Partly because folks DO care about Detroit, but also because Smokey Robinson and the Miracles performed.  They only played one song before leaving the stage:
