In this week’s Fellow Spotlight, we are checking in with Seth Haug. He fills us in on what he enjoys most about Detroit, his host company, Clark Hill and what he’s looking forward to as a Challenge Detroit Fellow.

Tell us about your neighborhood in the city, what are some of your favorite things about it?

seth1We (Nellie and I) love the condo we recently bought in the Art District of Detroit. In a routine dog walk (see my January Blog) we can educate ourselves on the history of Detroit, while taking in the splendor of 100+ year old buildings.

Travel a couple more blocks and you’ll find Detroit Cultural Icons that we love to bring visitors to:

Tell us about your host company and your role within the organization?

My host company is Clark Hill PLC, a large law firm headquartered in downtown Detroit.  From their website: “Clark Hill is a full-service, entrepreneurial legal and business solutions provider.”  From my experiences: Clark Hill is an excellent company, as they care about their employees and culture as much as the bottom line.  I’ve had the privilege to work in both the Accounting Services and Business Analytics departments, and look forward to growing professionally in the firm.

What have you learned from Challenge Detroit so far?

seth5The last 5 months have been a non-stop learning experience for me; and yet, life is best lived when you are in a state of constantly learning.  Here’s a tiny snapshot of what I’ve been enveloped in:

Detroit – a new city for me

  • Its History (successes & struggles)
  • Its People (influential, inspiring, & everyday)
  • Its Infrastructure (driving, eating, & playing)

The Fellows – a new social circle

  • Diverse background and experiences
  • Work styles and motivations
  • Their passion and commitment inspires me daily

Myself – reflection, reflection, reflection

  • Utilizing my strengths & acknowledging/addressing my weaknesses
  • Leadership is a skill that can get rusty like a sports skill
  • What do I truly value in life

What are you looking forward to most in the coming months? seth6

I probed a little deeper for the other questions, but I’m going with my quick answer gut on this one: The Spring!  I love the energy and opportunities that come with the first nice days of a Midwestern springtime.  Food trucks will be back in Campus Martius, I’ll be able to bike to work, and outdoor volleyball will be aplenty. (***FYI – This was written on the 16+ inch snowstorm day***)

What type of impact do you hope to have within the city and within your host company?

Challenge Detroit puts us in positions to succeed; seth7through challenges, networking opportunities, and personal volunteer requirements, we truly are being pushed to be the best version of ourselves.  I want to take full advantage of this year, and make it a foundation building year.  Detroit has become our home-base, so I want this All-In attitude to grow in the future.

This goes the same with Clark Hill, as this is a company that I am proud to be a part of, and am excited for the future.
