To celebrate the memory of Maya Angelou and all that she shared with the world I have picked out 3 quotes of hers and how I fell they speak to my life as well as the city of Detroit. Maya Angelou was not only a poet, mother, and civil rights activist but also was known to be a caring, humble and all around good person. Maya Angelou was a woman who fought for justice, education and equality. Angelou’s poetry has touched hearts all over the world and will continue to speak to lives for may generations to come. Here are the quotes I picked and how they relate to my experiences:
“You will face many defeats in your life but never let yourself be defeated”
Detroit has been through a lot to say the least. In my opinion Detroit has been battle tested and is rising from the ashes. These experiences have made the city stronger and is a living breathing testimony to the potential that lies beneath. Nothing stops Detroit.
“Nothing will work unless you do”
Anything worth having is worth fighting for. There are so many great things happening all over Detroit. So many people motivated to make sure this city succeeds. As long as we continue on the path of getting things done there is no way the city will fail. It will take time, but it will be worth it, as long as we put the work in.
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it”
This quote more so pertains to me and to others looking to find ways to make a difference. To contribute fully in any endeavor you must not only believe in what you are doing but play to your strengths. Use what makes you come alive, as way to convey your message. We need more passionate people doing what they love and less people doing what they “think” is expected of them.
RIP Maya Angelou
