How long do you normally wait for a pizza delivery? 30 minutes? 40? Maybe an hour, tops?
Last week, my girlfriend and I waited over two hours and twenty minutes for a delivery from the Domino’s in Cadillac Square, Downtown.
I should mention that if you walked from my new apartment in Lafayette Park to this Domino’s, it only takes twenty minutes. Hell, even if you were walking the one mile distance and it were covered in shards of glass à la Die Hard; I would imagine you could do it in less than two hours and twenty minutes.
With all that said, the decision to have our food shuttled by slug brought with it a conversation more thought-provoking than expected.
With my stomach singing its dulcet tones, I told Cheryl (in this blog I am changing my girlfriend’s name to Cheryl); “I think this is worst thing to happen to me in weeks.” And it was!
Since becoming a Challenge Detroit fellow, the program has afforded me two things that had been missing from my life: comfort and security.
Now, I still have bills like everyone else. But for a guy with a degree to go from loading pallets at a hardware store to wearing suits and recruiting high-tech IT consultants, it’s a change!
It bears mentioning that I was born in Detroit and grew up right on the NW border. If I can do it, you can too.
In any case, I guess that I am trying to say that life is better than ever. I have always worked hard, but now it seems that I work with purpose. With just one month under my belt, I have met hundreds of new people; made valuable connections in the arenas of business and charity, and have been able to finally give back to the city I love without having to worry about my own daily struggles.
When the worst thing in your life is cold pizza, beautiful is everything.

And to Domino’s,
No hard feelings. Let’s move forward.
