Throughout my years I have established a residence in now 3 different cities in the great state of Michigan. I was born in raised in our capital, Lansing MI. Upon graduation I ventured north to the beautiful, small town big school feeling city of Big Rapids, MI home of the Bulldogs and Ferris State University. Now I am embarking on my newest adventure here in the legendary city of Detroit, MI.

For the past month I have called Detroit home and surprisingly it’s nothing like I imagined it. I currently reside downtown in Riverfront Towers. Riverfront Towers is amazing! From my living room there is a view of the bridge to Canada that is breathtaking,

there is a track on the top of the parking garage and from there it feels as though you can see the whole city.

Downstairs there is a conveniently located restaurant (The Signature Grille) that has good food at low prices.

The residents are friendly and the staff is always willing to help. My past couple weekends have been spent getting lost (a lot), trying new restaurants (thank you Detroit Restaurant Week and Detroit Seafood Market!)

dropping in on a crossfit workout at a nearby box (Crossfit BMW) and exploring all the city has to offer with my fellow fellows. From running along the river front with “RunThisTown” to early mornings at the Eastern Market there is more than enough here to keep me busy. However, all these great things are not what surprise me. Not once have I felt unsafe here in this city is what surprises me. People describe Detroit as dangerous, violent, poverty stricken etc…and I have to admit I used to be one of them. Now I am convinced that most of the people that shine negative light on Detroit have never taken the time to explore it or speak to someone who lives here. I am not saying go take a walk at 2am down a dark alley, you do have to be safe and aware of your surroundings at all times but that’s not just in Detroit its everywhere.

Do you ever wonder why Detroit seems to attract so much negative attention? Why are people so keen on spotlighting the few mishaps this city has experienced?

Those are a few questions that pop into my head when I hear a negative comment about my new found home or read a less that flattering newspaper article about what’s going on in this city.
