Holding on tightly as I hung out my Dad’s passenger side window as he speed through New York City I took this picture.

The shot above was incredibly lucky. The way the bridge carries you through the frame and how the man with his bike gives you a sense of small he is compared to his everything else make this somewhat of a decent picture. Yet back when I was in high school and randomly started taking pictures on a family vacation to New York City, I thought I was urban version of Ansel Adams. Not really, since I had no clue who Ansel Adams was.

Yet that picture was a start. A start of a hobby. A start of a passion. A start of seeing the world a little bit differently. Since that picture, photography has been a place where the world slows down for a moment and everything seems a bit clearer.

As I have transitioned into Detroit life, with a new job, new friends, and new opportunities I spent time to do real photography in my new city. I promised myself I would take an hour to shoot around downtown. That one hour quickly turned into four.

In those four hours, some of it actually taking pictures and some of it just taking the city in, I realized how beautiful the city is and how lucky I am to being living here. I had a friend from Chicago recently ask me what’s in Detroit and why I would move there. I think sometimes words just don’t work, and sometimes pictures actually do it justice.
