Recently there’s seemed to be a lot of articles popping up like “Things 20-Somethings Should Spend Their Money On” or “Lifestyle Guide for the Young Professional”  These always seem to include something to do with what a high priority fitness should be. There’s no one adequately capable of arguing against the importance of good health. But that does not mean that good health is ever easy or fun at first. I’ve spent the past few months aiming to stay healthier in Detroit and have found that it’s definitely not easy. But surprisingly, it can totally be fun. Here’s your go-to guide on the best ways to work out in Detroit.

The Top 5 Ways to Stay Fit in Detroit

1. JABS Boxing Gym – Eastern Market

Making a recent addition to their Birmingham facility, Jabs Gym has opened a second location in Eastern Market. Jabs offers a wide variety of instructors and fitness coaches. Classes range from Bootcamp to BOYO (Boxing and Yoga) and Traditional Kickboxing. Wraps and gloves are required – you won’t get off easy at this gym. You’re guaranteed to meet your step goal and burn some serious calories under Jabs’ blacklights. Some of my favorite instructors include Armand Harris (a total boss at hyping up a class) and Angelo Nunez (guaranteed to simultaneously kick your ass and also make you feel good about yourself). Learn more about joining and get on your way to a fierce level of fit HERE.

2. Citizen Yoga Studio – Downtown Detroit

CY

Nestled below the always busy Z-lot in Downtown Detroit, Citizen Yoga offers one of the most zen work out experiences in the city. Class offering range from Rest and Relaxation with (one of my favorite instructors!) Rachel, Slow Burn with owner Kacee, Sunrise Flow with Jonathan (my other favorite instructor), Vinyasa, and Back to Basics. Come one, come all to Citizen. At this studio you won’t have to worry about being a beginner or about getting a good enough workout. CY offers an intense, warm (but don’t fear, not HOT Yoga), and relaxing experience all at once. You’ll leave your Savasana pose feeling stronger, more centered, and glad you are ‘Citizen.’ Learn more about the studio and let your inner yogi loose HERE.

3. Detroit Barre – Rivertown

Detroit Barre – For the ballerina inside all of us. This studio will get you toned and fit in a hot minute. Not really; the class is air conditioned and also a full hour – but it won’t feel like it! Barre uses finely tuned movements to intensify and strengthen every muscle group individually. Yes, you will be sore in the morning. And yes, you will be glad you do. Finally, the most traditional of all gyms on the list is The Wellness Center at One Campus Martius in Downtown Detroit. This facility offers all basic gym necessities, but don’t let basic lead you to believe this gym is boring. The gym offers all group classes for free with a membership including Cycle, Bootcamp, GSX, Kettlebell Training, Karate, and more. The gym also houses a chiropractor and several personal trainers to get you started on the right foot with your New Years Resolution. Get your workout playlist together and get yourself to the once “Compuware Building.” The ever encouraging, and my personal favorite trainer, Samar will be there to greet you with a smile, and a set of dumbells… Check out their Facebook page HERE.
