The title says it all.
This past Friday was our last leadership Friday of Challenge Detroit and it was sensational! The typical schedule consists of a segment called a “View from the Top” from CEOs and high ranking leadership in their respective organizations; this one was the best yet! What set this one apart from others was the transparency, honesty, passion, and sincerity from the speakers. They each spoke of their road to leadership; the roses, the thorns, and sweet smell of it all. They touched on what they were doing in their twenties and what shifts occurred in their professional matriculation.
After our “View from the Top”, we had a reflection portion of the day and it really got me back on track to my “why”. What I took away from the speakers is to identify my “why” and be led by that. Why do I do what I do everyday? What motivated me to apply to my position? What was a turning point to direct me where I am now? Why?
You must be led by a why, if you’re not, you’re wasting your time and the people you’re servicing and working with. You watch TV for entertainment, you play sports for fun, you workout to feel fit, you eat because you’re hungry. You work because of what? You chose your job because? In order for fulfillment and self-actualization, you must have a ‘why’.
If my blog post wasn’t an effective message, give a listen to my fellow Detroiter, Eric Thomas the Hip-Hop Preacher.
