Oh West Village

West Village is one of my go-to places in Detroit. This lovely village is not far from my apartment. While still within Detroit, it has a small town feel as opposed to the feeling of downtown. Having grown up in the country, I appreciate the charm of walking the sidewalks of West Village as I admire the homes and apartments lining the streets.

Welcome to the neighborhood

Detroit often has many different pop-ups and new businesses opening across the city. On Valentines Day, a new business, La Bohème, joined the ranks of my favorite West Village stops. I often frequent Red Hook and Sister Pie, two places I love to take those who come to visit me in Detroit. La Bohème is a delightful café featuring coffee, tea, and French cuisine featuring crepes, pastries, quiche and many other options. The café is open Tuesday-Sunday from 7:30 am-4:00 pm.

Mixing of culture

The sunlight poured in through the front window as my friends and I entered into La Bohème on February 14th. When we stepped into the café, the owner, Eve de Castro, greeted us warmly. We peered through the refrigerator glass admiring all the beautiful pastries as I stood in indecision on which one to order. I was drawn to the unique teapots and tins of tea adorning the shelves behind the counter. Eve graciously explained the menu as she answered our many questions.

Upon ordering, Eve encouraged us to take over the table by the window. She shared how she was from France, and how she was intrigued by the story of the city of Detroit, which eventually drew her to come visit. One thing led to another, and she decided to open La Bohème with the vision to bring together French and Detroit culture. Hearing her story, I was inspired by her desire to intentionally bring together two cultures with the purpose of learning from the other.

I think there is so much value in taking the time to learn from someone or something that might be very different from what you have always known, and being willing to share your own story with those who might have a different background. I have found in these moments, this is where true learning takes place, which can often to lead to empathy, compassion, and perhaps even worldview changes. As I continue to be a learner in my time in Detroit, I am excited to support local businesses that are looking to cultivate spaces that allow for meaningful discussion and reflection. I especially love that one of these spaces is in West Village.
