I tend to consider myself a city girl. Growing up in the suburbs and living in Detroit now, I can’t see myself wanting to live anywhere that I have to drive 20 minutes to buy groceries. However, as a born and raised Michigander, I love spending my summers Up North. Spending so much time with my fellow fellows these past nine months, many of whom have never lived in Michigan before this, made me think about how great it is that Michigan has it’s own built-in summer spots, something that has just become so commonplace for people who live here. Here are some of my staple spots Up North:
Town Club, Elk Rapids, MI
One of my favorite things to do while on vacation is eat. Town Club is exactly what the name says. A small-town bar where all of the locals hang out, with some of the best greasy bar food I’ve ever had. When I go Up North with my family, we stay at my aunt and uncle’s place in Elk Rapids and this is always one of the first places we go when we get there.
If you’re willing to swim through the crowds of tourists that flood the island in Michigan’s three warm months, you’ll see that it’s worth it. With no cars allowed on the island, you leave your car in the city and take the ferry. Bikes are available to rent to ride a scenic route around the island, or you can take an old fashioned horse and carriage ride.
Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Mears, MI
Silver Lake Sand Dunes offer dune rides or the option to climb the dunes (take the ride, trust me.) At the top of the dunes you get the most gorgeous view of the beach and water. Plus if you get a fun dune ride driver, they’ll drive like you’re on a roller coaster.
Cherry Bowl Drive-In, Honor, MI
Sure, the Ford-Wyoming is just a few minutes away from here, but the Cherry Bowl Drive-In is like a trip back in time. In operation every summer since 1953, they even use an antique popcorn popper. Complete with a mini-golf course, it would be fun for a family or as the most adorable retro date night.
Our state’s pride and joy! You don’t have to go north to see it, either. A three-hour trip to the west side of the state and you can witness what all Michiganders are so proud of.
