As this will be the last blog that I write for Challenge Detroit, I have decided to keep it short and sweet. To wrap up this year’s blog series I will leave you with my biggest lesson’s learned throughout the past year about the city that I call home.
- The city of Detroit is taking the right steps forward. Upon receiving the email informing me that I was selected as a year two fellow, I was a little nervous to return to the city that raised me, due to the recent bankruptcy news. Throughout this year I have had the opportunity to meet numerous citizens from many different aspects of the city, each focused on making the city’s future stronger than it’s past.
- Detroit is closer to the city of Metropolis than it is to Gotham City. Hopefully this blog is not big enough to draw attention from the big shot producers that are currently filming Superman vs. Batman, or the television series Gotham. Because both movies inaccurately utilized Detroit to represent Gotham City. I say this because both productions jumped at the opportunity to use Detroit to portray the sinister Gotham City, and overlooked that it is more related to a city of opportunity and hope. In comic book lingo Metropolis is that city. Anything is possible in Detroit and the citizens of the city are some of the most glass half full people that I have come across in the past year. The only difference between Detroit and Metropolis is that Detroit is real.
- Last but not least I’ve learned that Detroit is the city that I plan to start my career, build my brand, and raise my family in. I’ve met some amazing people and visited some amazing places, all while living within the city’s limits. This experience has opened my eyes to the possibility of growing old in the city that I once found myself running away from.
I am excited to see the end of the fellowship come, and the next part of my life’s journey to begin. This has been a good year for me spiritually, mentally, and professionally. I look to continue my live, work, play, give, lead initiative within the city of Detroit for many years to come. To all my Detroiters, it doesn’t matter if you are native or the city has adopted you as one of its own, remember that we are all the we have and that is all that we will need in order to thrive in the near and distant future. With that being said let us continue to work with each other and support all Detroit initiatives. And for the last time as a Challenge Detroit Fellow Los Speaks.
