One of the most salient points he made to us on that day was the idea that Detroit holds the highest concentration of black people outside of Africa. It stuck with me because the concept of this city serving as America’s first black metropolis, a descriptor coined most notably by the New York Times in 1990, in no small part drives my passion for Detroit. This is both the blackest big city in America and the biggest black city in America, and so much of its identity and history is derived from that distinction.
