In my last blog (scroll down) I shared 10 life-long self improving “tidbits” that I have learned as a 20 something, not only from myself but from experiencing this moment in my life with 35 other fellows. I felt like I didn’t do number 3 justice: “Learn something from everyone.” It is my personal belief that the people around you could be anybody, no matter what preconceptions you have. Every human is so much more than the preconceived notions we subject ourselves and others to- what we look like, what we dress like, how we speak, EVERYTHING. You can learn a lot about yourself by learning about others as well. I tend to be fairly introverted and I only share what I think you need to know, but in this case, for this blog, I thought it would be fun to share a “tidbit” of what I’ve learned from every Challenge Detroit Fellow and Leader. Welcome to the insiders club.

Alison Figliomeni has taught me to value the small efforts of individual passions through her commitment to the TOMS modo. Every action counts.

Alissa Sevrioukova has taught me to think globally not only because of her unique background, but through her effort to acknowledge global events in a place where it is easy to get lost in local issues.

Alyssa Brown has taught me that you do not need to speak loudly to be passionate and bold. Her creative skills and love of life are evident through her work and commitment to family, friends, and Detroit.

Amanda Gettgen has taught me that in any situation a smile and bubbly personality are welcoming, calming, and above all encouraging for you and those around you. When in doubt 🙂

Ann Phillips has taught me to tell people what I think and given me a push to become a licensed architect, together. Ann is one of the most honest and passionate people I know.

Anna Schroen has taught me that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can DO big things. She has worked with NPR, the Lions, and she doesn’t let her age hold her back- she aims high!

Annie Hakim has taught me not to be shy about how much I like good tv shows. Her bold first blog was about TV Shows, and I’ll be honest, when I first read it it gave me a whole new perspective on modern culture and maybe even life- MIND BLOWN.

Benjamin Breuninger has taught me how to write. I B-line for his blog every month and then text him how awesome it is. A little embarrassing, but I read it and jot down techniques, style, ideas, all those things only weirdos write down when they read blogs.

Bethany Felder has taught me to boldly share my passions. Her love of teaching and commitment to educating youth in Detroit not only displays her character, but encourages those around her to be deeply passionate as well.

Branden Bufford has taught me to love life in all its forms and SHOW it, especially in Detroit.

Brittany Sanders has taught me that being a leader can mean many things, not just what you think it does.

Brittany Stallworth has taught me to embrace life and wear it on your sleeve, or in our case skin. Our first interaction was her request for me to draw her a tattoo, which is such an honor because they celebrate the most meaningful moments and people in her life.

Caroline Dobbins has taught me to maximize the Challenge Detroit experience through networking- she always knows where to direct you when you are looking reach out!

Carmen Bojanowski has taught me to embrace my inner Rocky Horror Picture Show character and to share and indulge in the nontraditional cultural scene that is SOOOOO rich in Detroit.

Courtney Hardeback has taught me that the unexpected can be fun and a chance to embrace new friendships and expand established ones, from nerf dart excursions to fish fry fridays.

Courtney McCall has taught me that sometimes you just need to dance and goof around before working, not only because its fun and stress relieving, but because it turns coworkers into great friends.

Deirdre Green Groves has taught me that any idea can happen, especially in Detroit. Here we go!

Ellen Trudell has taught me that being a Detroiter extends far beyond the city’s limits. Her family’s deep roots, love, and support of this city, even through rough times, is something every metro Detroiter can learn from.

Ezekial Harris has taught me to think big all day every day, and not just in your own head. There’s a lot of value in putting your ideas out there for others to grow.

Hannah Mills has taught me to love what you do! Her love for her host company inspires me to do the best job I can every day at mine.

Hayden McNeil has taught me that spring is apparently the best time of the year. I had no idea until he listed off 15 reasons in just one minute…don’t forget the derby.

Ifeanyi Nwachukwu has taught me that even if you’re not on a challenge together, you can still be really good friends. He calls me “Bowski”- I don’t even know how or when that happened.

Jason Aoraha has taught me the power of getting people behind an idea and the strategy which that requires.

Jazmyn Becker has taught me the power of asking questions. Every time we talk she asks me questions and remembers my answers. Asking questions is a wonderful way of showing you care and engaging in someone else’s life that I never realized.

Jennifer Ehrhardt has taught me so much about professionalism, which isn’t the funnest thing I mentioned here, but sooooo valuable. I am so appreciative for her willingness to lend an ear and provide a peer’s insight.

Jessica Wang has taught me the importance of humor and being good natured. She thinks I’m funny. And it has encouraged me to speak up!

Jonathan Ganci has taught me to capture memories with his love and skill for photography. I just might be getting a new camera because of him…

Kenneth Andejeski has taught me to do everything and don’t be afraid to follow your passions from frisby teams to international data collecting conferences.

Kristina Wilson has taught me that being a woman in a predominantly male field is important to talk about, especially to other women, and especially to ones in other disciplines. We got this ladies.

Larry Latimore has taught me how to be patient. As one of the more seasoned fellows, he has never shown frustration with anyone who does not have as much experience.

Liz Venatta has taught me to follow up with people who have done the job you need to do. As a current project lead, she asked me what I learned while I was project lead- DUH! Why didn’t I do that?

Martha Cavazos has taught me how to communicate goals with others and accomplish them as a team.

Nicholas Prys has taught me that good work comes after eating a good meal, especially if he made it- also thank you for that.

Rachel Rosenbaum has taught me how to be a roommate! I had never roomed with another person who spoke english before, and I am happy we randomly ran into each other in New Orleans last summer. Thanks for all the “debriefs”.

Sarah Robb has taught me that even if you don’t know something or you are uncomfortable, you can still contribute great knowledge to any situation.

Sarms Jabra has taught me the importance of biking and living the models you believe in. Many people embrace fad lifestyles, but his passion for healthy transportation is a model for us all to follow, easy or hard.

Shelley Danner has taught me that design thinking can be for anyone and anything at anytime.

Seth Haug has taught me the importance of good naturedness and playfulness. You really do get to know people better when you “play”. #playDetroit y’all.
