Squad Goals (The Making of a Fellow) by Demond Childers

Goals, goals, goals, goals

Goals I do adore!

Squad goals, career goals, city goals a go

I turned hard goals into jello on the living room floor

I strived to be the best, I played through much pain

I saw goals scored at DC FC games

Goalies did their job,  now I’m doing my thang

I could’ve fell wayside but now I’m tryna’ bring change

What’s the road to glory, though?

Can I travel that?  The path of my story, though, gotta unravel that

Unfolded while holding on to that jail in my mind

A prison of my own making, so I’m dreading my prime

Can I afford to be like the rest or should I aim higher?

Trying to reach for the sky, but in the streets, they aiming higher

Malcolm told us to choose… the ballot or the bullet,

But to me…  the only choice, is the bullet or the pen

You see, I chose to embrace writing cause it kept me from the pen

But, some never made it, some shall remain nameless,

But their names will never ever again be in vain.

Instead, them names will forever ever be within.

Those names I hold close.

Only a few will ever know-  the beauty of the concrete street adorned that bore roses.

As long as I breathe, their names will motivate me.

And truth be told, I been so devoted lately,

Even up late, I have these debates in my mind

How can I take what I learned from Challenge and enhance these designs?

How can I take a human-centered approach that enhances mankind?

A landmine of challenges once avoided, but now anew with purpose,

And visions I been toyin’ with,  so they bound to surface

While surrounded by other leaders, some friendships I been growing with

And every opportunity I use to get better…

and get better…

and get better…

And better and better than ever!

They say change your self first if you want to change the world for the better

I’m glad that I’m a fellow, 42 birds that flocked together.

They say change your self first if you want to change the world for the better

I’m glad that I’m a fellow, Year Five Challenge Detroit forever.
