Although it may not feel like it outside, SPRING IS HERE! And in honor of that fact, I’d like to share some of my favorite activities to do in and around the city of Detroit during the springtime.
1. Detroit Restaurant Week – anyone who knows me knows how much I love a good meal, and this year from April 11th-April 20th food connoisseurs like myself who are dining on a budget may enjoy three course meals at some of the city’s premiere restaurants for a mere $30! It’s coming up soon so stay posted to the Facebook page and website for more info on which dining spots will be participating this year.
2. Flower Day at Eastern Market – Another must attend spring attraction for metro Detroiters is Flower Day at Eastern Market, which falls on May 18 this year. According to the website, the event hosts over 200,000 visitors annually and is amongst one of the largest flower shows in the country. If you don’t mind the crowds, you can shop over 15 acres of hanging and exotic plants, flats, perennials, shrubbery and any number of other types of flowers and foliage on display in one of the city’s most lively locations any weekend during warm weather, but especially during Flower Day. Even if you’re not a big flower fan, check it out for the people watching or just to soak up the excitement of Eastern Market in the springtime!
3.Planting Flowers with Mom – Why am I so crazy about Flower Day you ask? Because that’s where we go to pick out the additions to my Mom’s garden that I help her work in once the weather breaks. We sit in the front yard and watch the cars drive past, or speak to the neighbors as they stroll down the sidewalk and we plant Begonias, Impatiens and Marigolds. Or else we’re in the backyard, listening to the radio, drinking iced tea and enjoying the final arrival of the warmer weather.
4. Visiting Local Parks – Lastly, once the frost breaks and the sunshine starts shining a little stronger and longer, I enjoy visiting local parks both to exercise and also just to enjoy the nice weather. My favorites are North Rosedale Park where I can walk the neighborhood and look at all of the lovely homes and well manicured lawns before arriving at the park itself, where I then usually stop on a bench for a rest, or take a ride on the swings before continuing on my walk. Belle Isle is also a classic with its views of the Detroit or Windsor skyline, depending upon what side of the island you’re on and the beautiful conservatory (where my parents were married). Inglenook Park in Southfield is pretty cool too if you have little kids in tow who’d enjoy a pretty impressive playscape.
