Through working with COTS on our third challenge, a few of the other fellows and I had started frequenting a lovely little grocery store in midtown called the Ye Olde Butcher Shoppe (YOBS). Located right across Woodward from COTS, it was super convenient, and was great for picking up breakfast or lunch on Challenge Fridays.  I had been originally introduced to YOBS on my interview trip for Challenge Detroit, through a tour with D:hive. Even then, I found it to be a quality establishment, but I believe I can speak for myself and for other fellows in saying that we didn’t begin to really value it until recently.

Unfortunately, our timing was off.  On the second to last Friday with COTS, we learned about YOBS plans to shut their doors – for good. It appears that the opening of the nearby Whole Foods market this past summer drew away a large portion of their business.  By the time we visited for lunch again the following week, the majority of their shelves were empty and the following day would be their last.

I was substantially upset by this series of events, possibly unreasonably so. So I took the time to dissect for myself what exactly about this situation had upset me so much. One of my absolute favorite things about Detroit is diverse variety of local establishments that make up Detroit’s consumer market. So many local businesses and restaurants are rooted here in the city. I thrive off the fact that the experiences I get when visiting these local retailers are unique to Detroit.  The Ye Olde Butcher Shoppe is only one mere example of the numerous local businesses the city has ( or had )  to offer.

I appreciate the willingness and interest of larger, national, corporate companies to move into the city, and I recognize the need for these larger staples to root our consumer market. However, if Detroit were to become a vastly populated by nothing but chain stores, it would be a shame and a complete waste of all the uniqueness the city has to offer. If Detroit loses its uniqueness, it loses some of its draw.

So, in summary, this is a reminder to all to SHOP DETROIT LOCAL.  Experience all of the great local businesses this city has to offer you!
