Recently, my boss introduced my co-worker and I to a diner called Rose’s Fine Food on the East side of Detroit.  The atmosphere is very quaint.  The space looks like a classic diner with a rustic twist.  The cups and plates are vintage-looking and mismatched in a complimentary way.  There are fresh flowers on the table, and the staff is friendly.

As we sat down, I examined the menu.  It is immediately evident that Rose’s Fine Food is intentional about what they serve, including things like Lavender Lemon Soda and an assortment of gluten free, vegan and other specialty items .  Picking one thing to order was a tough decision, but I decided to go with the BAE Sandwich and a cup of Populace Coffee followed by a slice of Banana Cream Pie.  No surprise – The meal was fresh and delicious!

What is even cooler about Rose’s Fine Food is its’ mission-driven back story.  The diner uses as many local, fresh ingredients as possible, and is dedicated to paying its employees a living wage.  Another cool thing is that they split all of their tips between the front and back of the house, and they donate a portion of them to Detroit charities that staff members choose.  They also support their local community members by giving neighbors who live within one mile of them a 10% discount.

If you haven’t checked out this diner, you should.  In my opinion, they are a great example of what is happening in Detroit.  People are able to take classic things like diners and put their own creative twist on them.
