1 Corinthians 9:19-23: “For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more… 22 I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.”
Paul adapted his teachings and approach to evangelism to cast a wider net and reach individuals through their own culture. This scripture has functioned as the foundation to my approach to being a resident of Detroit. As a city which takes great pride in both the triumphs and challenges the city collectively has overcome, I have found it paramount to be single patron amongst a greater body and to become inclusive in the culture and lifestyle of Detroit.
Everyone, regardless of the city they call home, has a story and a contribution. Taking the time to understand the people who compose the fabric and backbone of Detroit has provided me a deeper passion for the city. The people of Detroit are what make the city who and what is it, not the media.
Detroit as a greater whole has pushed me to question my ”Why” and open my eyes.
Detroit has continued to collectively gather strength from distress, and grow through reflection. The people who have endured years and years of hell are what truly make Detroit the city it is and they will forever remain the face of it.
In the next 11 months, I hope to merely function as a vessel to support the city and push the real Detroit to the forefront, unfiltered and honest.
Anyone still questioning the heart and drive of Detroit;
Stop taking these lies and covering your eyes. Open your eyes and stop making it hard.
