I am a junkie for retail therapy. When I feel down and out, there is no better fix than a $5 sale bin find at the back of a dusty Kohls store. Though some may never understand the elation of a retail fix, studies prove that retail therapy is a “real thing”. A 2014 study done at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, found that making shopping choices can help to restore a sense of personal control over one’s environment and reduce residual sadness. I am not ashamed to admit to self-induced therapy because I figure it’s a bit less intrusive than red wine or chain smoking. This weekend I further justified it because a) I had a U of M study to back me and b) it was Small Business Saturday in the D!
I started my S.B.S (yep going to use an acronym) at D:Hive where recent BUILD graduates featured their budding entrepreneurial ventures. From gluten free desserts to planters for your bicycles, the bazaar was buzzing with new ideas and future storefronts of Detroit. One of my favorite buys was organic soap made from rosemary and mint grown in local gardens! The Hive gave me a sassy new S.B.S tote and provided free shuttle service around the city for the day. Stopping at The Fisher, Park Shelton, Midtown, and more, the event was a great way to discover hidden gems in Detroit for a quick retail fix. Not only was the day filled with great conversation with local artists and owners, but it also further cemented my belief that great shopping can be done locally for all those on my Christmas list.
I also stopped off at Detroit Institute of Bagel, which gave away a FREE bagel and shmear for participating in the shopping adventure! You’re going to feed me to shop? Sign me up! This handy coupon was found in the Pure Detroit Small Business Passport, which offers caffeinated goodies and coupons to over 20 local spots. Each time you shop, you not only benefit from discounts, but you get a happy stamp in your passport for supporting Detroit business.
Sad that you missed this psychologically beneficial experience? No worries- passports are found at the Pure Detroit store and valid throughout the holiday season. The city will also be hosting Noel Night on December 6th- where horse draw carriage rides, carolers, and holiday shoppers collide into one big holiday smorgasbord. Don’t doubt the power of a little retail therapy this season. It can boost your dopamine levels, and the local Detroit economy.
