This year has been a year of growth for each of us. It’s hard to believe it’s over. I used this year as an opportunity to make new friends, find what drives me, what inspires me, and what allows me to serve others. I have done all of those things and more.
As I reflect on this past year, I think of the friendships I’ve made and the lessons I’ve learned. I can’t possibly share them all, but I can share a few lessons I’ve learned during my Challenge year. I’ve learned that some stories are made even better by sharing, I hope you make note of some of my personal lessons I’ve learned throughout my fellowship year.
- Be your own cheerleader, if you can’t advocate for yourself no one else will either
- Diversify for friendships, it’s so important to expand your social network because you never know when you need them.
- Learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. This will allow you to grow and be resilient with whatever challenges you face.
- Sometimes letting go of people and opportunities is the best way to learn a lesson. Be selective with your friendships and working relationships. If they don’t see your value, you may not recognize your own value.
- Invest in yourself, do you and don’t apologize for it. Looking back on your accomplishments and triumphs is a REALLY cool thing. And don’t regret your choices. Remember, a decision you made was what you once wanted. Everything is a learning opportunity.
- It’s okay to close a chapter of your life. This will open up new opportunities in ways you can’t ever predict. Remember lesson #3.
- Do something different and don’t be afraid to ask questions. BUT don’t let the unknown answers prevent you from being adventurous. BE ADVENTUROUS!
- Life is what you make it. Don’t blame your decisions on others. Be accountable for yourself and your choices.
I have reached another decade and chapter in my life. I am happy to say I’m staying in Southeastern Michigan. After all, the intention of this program was to recruit and retain. I’m happy to stay, grow, and learn more about this dynamic community. I love it here. I love my community here. And the friendships I’ve built along the way are irreplaceable!
