With my host company, Cornerstone Charter Schools, I’ve been afforded the opportunity to work with some of Detroit’s best and brightest students, grades K-10. I want to say that the future looks VERY bright!

When I first walked into my position, I was subconsciously internalizing some of banter that I am constantly bombarded with via media as well as personal conversations

There’s a common misconception that urban students, students from low-income families, or, frankly, African-American students do not succeed because they “don’t value education.” Not only is this notion highly prejudicial, but it’s just WRONG. There are so many uncontrollable factors that make it increasingly difficult for these children to succeed; some, unfortunately, fall victim to the circumstances that surround them. Others do not. But what I can affirm is that perseverance is ubiquitous, intelligence is pervasive, and character awareness is blossoming in the D.

It’s no secret that Detroit has had struggles, most prevalent, graduation rates and test scores. But I challenge each individual to spend some time with these students, listen to their stories, hear where they come from. A majority of the time, students need someone to talk to; someone to encourage them and to help them excel to their highest potential.

I visited with the above children for TWO HOURS as a part of “Partner Mornings” at Cornerstone. Two. That’s it. If everyone gave TWO HOURS a MONTH to show our children that we care, I think the outlook would be very different.

Do it for the kids. Do it for the future of the city. Do it for the future of the COUNTRY. heck, do it so you can take an awesome picture. 😉 (I joke, I joke. do it for the first three)

Let me explain something: Detroit’s kids need our help. You play an essential role.
