5 Unique things to experience in Detroit:
1. The Funk Light Bike Gang: I don’t know if that’s their real name, but it should be. I decided to take a night time bike ride down the Riverfront. It’s really nice to ride by the river at night. It’s a little bit cooler down there and all the buildings on both sides are all lit up. Some bikes are also lit up. Two of the times I was riding the riverfront I was lucky enough to run into this wild crew of six or seven bikers. I call them the funk light bike gang because their bikes are lit up with different colored leds and they cruise around bumping classic funk music. You would never see that in the U.P.
2. Synagogue Dance Parties: The downtown Synagogue throws dance parties. They have beer, the rabbi even dances. I have never been to a Synagogue before I went to a dance party in one. It was worth it alone to see the building.
3. The Turkey Grill: There’s this turkey place on Woodward. I have never heard of a turkey place before but my roommate and I decided to check it out. Like most of the best places it didn’t look like anything flashy, but it was awesome. I got a flat piece, I don’t really know what the flat piece of the turkey is but it was delicious.
4. Coney’s: I had no idea why everyone loved coneys. If you don’t know “coney” is the Detroit term for a diner. Well the 24 hour coney comes in very handy after putting some overtime in midtown. Detroit One Coney has everything you could possibly want to eat. I really fell in love when I could get a coney dog, mozzarella sticks, and some chocolate cake.
5. Heidelberg Project: The Heidelberg Project is probably one of the most famous unique things in Detroit. That doesn’t diminish how uniquely Detroit it is. Where else would a recycled art exhibit work?
