Parks and Public Spaces

Rouge Park Joy

There’s something truly special about being able to give back to your community using something you’re passionate about. For me, that passion has always been parks and outdoor spaces. Ever since I was a little kid growing up in Brazil, I’ve loved spending time in parks and connecting with others in my community.

Now, as an adult living in America, I feel grateful to have the opportunity to give by contributing to non-profit organizations that advocate the importance of parks and public spaces. Through the first Challenge Detroit project with Detroit Parks Coalition, I now know a park that holds a special place in my memories: Rouge Park.

I had a wonderful time with my team at Rouge Park. For me, it was a powerful reminder of how these spaces can bring people together and also reminded me of my childhood. I could even play while I give!

I felt energized and inspired to continue working. That moment and the process of the first challenge showed me that parks and public spaces will always be important for the community, no matter the country.

ABOUT: Hello! I’m Raquel Santos and I’m originally from Brazil. While growing up I had the privilege of living in several different cities, with that, I consider many places to be my hometown. However, the last city I lived in Brazil was called Governador Valadares. I studied architecture and urbanism at UNIVALE. When I’m not working, I enjoy exploring new places, trying new foods, learning new languages, and spending time with my family and cats.
