“Challenge Detroit gave me opportunities to expand my worldview by introducing me to amazing community leaders (that I would never meet on my own) who have dedicated so much time to bettering their communities. I have been inspired and challenged by the innovative solutions and expert knowledge that these selfless leaders have shared.” – Jane Sun

A Thoughtful Space

Detroit is a place filled with people committed to uplifting their community in the way that best meets its unique needs. One of these remarkable places is Wayne Metro, an organization that we are collaborating with for our second Challenge Project.

On our first Friday with Wayne Metro, we learned about their mission to eradicate poverty through various programs and toured their Welcome Center. The Welcome Center specifically left a significant impression on me. As we walked in, we were greeted by smiling faces. The Welcome Center seemed more like a lounge area, with comfortable seating and distinctive orange cylinder lights hanging from the ceiling. Our guide explained how carefully they designed the Welcome Center to provide dignity for people who are seeking their help.

The Welcome Center goes beyond a typical help center; it provides comfort and relaxation. The thoughtful space, complete with sound-absorbing lamps and coves for private conversations, reflects the commitment to a safe space where people can share their needs without fear of others hearing.

The connected cafe was also intentionally designed, acting as a platform for local businesses to showcase their foods. Customers, while enjoying their meals, have the option to pay-it-forward by covering the cost of a stranger’s meal in the waiting room. I wasn’t surprised to hear that the Welcome Center receives substantial amounts of visitors a month, serving as a haven that eliminates the stress that comes with seeking help in a new, unfamiliar environment. Being at Wayne Metro was just one of the many invaluable experiences I’ve had of witnessing impactful work being done by amazing people in Detroit.

ABOUT: Hey! My name is Jane and I’m from a small suburb in Yorktown, Virginia. I went to the University of Virginia for Speech Pathology and Computer Science, but now I am pursuing a career in product design for the tech/software industry (I am a Fellow at Total Solutions where I am a Design Consultant.). I love all things art: going to museums, doing arts and crafts, appreciating good graphic design wherever – in shops, media, books, and more.
