In this week’s Fellow Spotlight, we are checking in with Jazmyn Becker. She fills us in on what she enjoys most about Detroit, her host company Team Detroit, and what she’s looking forward to as a Challenge Detroit Fellow.
Tell us about living in Detroit. What neighborhood do you live in and what are some things that make it unique and exciting.
Midtown is full of diverse individuals and I love that professors, students from around the globe, families, and young professionals all live within blocks of our townhome. In addition, I can walk to over 20 restaurants in less than ten minutes from my front door, which I never had in the suburbs.
What do you enjoy most about living, working, playing, giving and leading in Detroit?
I enjoy working with area nonprofits and learning from one another. They have taught me so much about persistence and dedication to one’s community.
Tell us about your host company and your role in the organization?
I work at Team Detroit with the HR Recruiting Team. I love my job because I get to help connect great talent with a phenomenal global advertising agency.
What have you learned with Challenge Detroit so far?
I have learned how to balance community commitments with my professional life. After Challenge Detroit, I know that community engagement will be an integral part of my life. Learning how to balance that with career progression is key.
What kind of impact do you hope to have with your host company? With the city?
I hope to have aided in creating a pipeline of junior level talent that will enrich diverse perspectives at the organization. I hope to create tangible takeaways for our nonprofit partners that will be implemented beyond our Challenge Detroit scope.
What are you most looking forward to in the coming months of Challenge Detroit?
I am so excited to work on my very own impact project and work intimately with a nonprofit partner to collaborate on a project of our own creation.
