“I encourage applying to be a Fellow because this program offers the unique experience of blending professional development, community engagement, leadership training, and cultural understanding that fosters holistic growth and impact. ” – Henry Zhou
Discovering the Why
Challenge Detroit has shown that giving isn’t just an act, but rather it is a mentality forged by intentionality and nurtured by initiative. Actions such as volunteering once or twice shows generosity, but there’s much more to giving than community service. Challenge Detroit has exemplified that giving is about offering time, attention, passion, education, and intent. Whether it’s advocating for higher quality public transportation, eliminating food waste and creating meals for those in need; Challenge Detroit has also highlighted some of the most altruistic organizations and individuals in the city of Detroit.
One aspect of giving is education– sharing knowledge, mentoring, influencing and being influenced. Throughout my swift few months at this fellowship, I learned about discovering the “why” in things and the impact and importance of giving. It allowed for a sense of purpose and fulfillment to be renewed and reminded me why I applied to the fellowship in the first place. The “Give” pillar in Challenge Detroit demonstrates adding intent and attention in acts of service and fosters different catalysts for positive change.
