In this week’s Fellow Spotlight, we are checking in with Courtney McCall. She fills us in on what she enjoys most about Detroit, her host company, Plante Moran, and what she enjoys most about being a Challenge Detroit Fellow.

Tell us about living in Detroit. What neighborhood do you live in and what things make it unique and exciting?

I currently live Downtown, where there is always something happening in the area. With Detroit being the farthest that I’ve ever live without family nearby, I wanted to live somewhere that would allow me to adopt the some of the perks of the city. The vibrant streets and cool events are so much fun to be around, especially during the summer. Summer 2014 was my first time in Detroit, and my entire experience living in the city truly made me fall in love.

What do you enjoy most about living, working, playing, giving and leading in Detroit?

Anytime anyone asks me what I enjoy about Detroit, I never hesitate to say that it’s the people. Where I live, work, play, giving, or lead in the city would not be as meaningful if it weren’t for all the Detroiters I met along the way.

Tell us about your host company and your role in the organization.

My host company is Plante Moran, where I am a Marketing Fellow spanning across three departments—marketing, graphics, and HR/Recruiting. Each day, I am doing projects ranging from online ads to logo design to social media. The best part of being a part of multiple teams is the ability to follow certain projects from start to finish. There is a sense of accomplishment to watch certain things come to fruition. An added benefit is learning the needs and habits of each department.

What have you learned from Challenge Detroit so far?

This program has shown me the things that I am passionate about the most. It has also shown me that I am capable of having multiple passions at the same time—and it’s okay! I have gained serious confidence and knowledge this past year, and I’m not quite sure if I would have learned this quickly anywhere else. I hope to always keep the momentum going.

What kind of impact do you hope to have with your host company and within the city?

I hope to continue bringing the knowledge I discover from workshops, seminars, conferences, small conversations, and life to help improve the way we look at business. I hope to inspire progression, at work and in the city.

What are you most looking forward to in the final months of Challenge Detroit?

I look forward to ending this year as a catalyst for the next year. With all that I have planned the next few months, I hope to set a path to continue making a difference in the future. More immediately, I want to spend time with all the fellows whom I’ve come to love like family.
