Tell us about living in Detroit. What neighborhood do you live in and what things make it unique and exciting?

Living in Detroit has been a unique experience. I describe it to my friends as “The South, up north,” because people (generally) seem more open and friendly than what I’m use to. I live in Lafayette Park. I love how close it is to the heart of downtown, and how relaxed the neighborhood is.

What have you learned from Challenge Detroit so far?

I’ve learned to see the importance of small steps/actions when it comes to the bigger picture. In other words, every little thing we do can have an impact on our city.

Tell us about your host company and your role in the organization.

I work as a junior digital analyst at Doner Advertising. It’s a really neat office, and a fast-paced work environment. In my role, I help analyze social media channels and content, and how/how much people are engaging with them.

What kind of impact do you hope to have with your host company and within the city?

I hope to bring a unique perspective to the table at my host company. Perhaps I can help look at social media content from a new angles. I hope to help change (once and for all) the negative perceptions of Detroit and its inhabitants. I hope to be an ambassador for the city and promote its beauty.

Where is the first place you would bring someone who has never been to Detroit before and why?

I would take them to Lafayette Park during the springtime. We would be able to check out the riverfront, see Canada across the water, visit Greektown, ride the People Mover, eat at a myriad of places…the list goes on.

What advice would you give to an individual who is considering applying to become a Challenge Detroit fellow.
Be proactive – don’t rely on Challenge Detroit to create a whole Detroit experience for you. Go out and find things in the city that speak directly to you.
