In this week’s Fellow Spotlight, we are checking in with Ben Newton. He fills us in on what he enjoys most about living in the city, and his host company, the Marketplace Homes!

1) Ben, tell us about your move to Detroit?

Upon graduating from Ohio University CD BLOG 3in 2011, I made monthly trips to Detroit to scout for an inexpensive home. In June of the following year I found the house of my dreams in a picturesque neighborhood in Northwest Detroit and made the move. Being the owner of an old house at age 23 came with unique challenges, but overall it has been a great experience.

2) What do you enjoy most about living in Detroit?

I like how much there is to explore. CD BLOG 5I like the low cost of living. I like the grit and tenacity of the residents. I like the music scene. I like how fast everyone drives. I like the food. I like the architecture. I like the sweltering summers and the frigid winters. Most of all I like that I can do just about anything I want with minimal interference.

3) Tell us about your host company, and what you do?

I work for Marketplace Homes, a small and relatively new company doing big things in the world of real estate. I have worn many hats at the company and am now an accountant in our Finance Department.

4) What is an interesting project you are working on at Marketplace Homes?

One of my projects is to visit new construction builders around the region and take high quality photographs of their model homes using advanced aperture and editing techniques. The goal is to have a stockpile of high quality images of new homes to use for Marketplace Homes’ stunning new website in order to fuel business for our company and our builder partners.

4) What makes working at Marketplace Homes unique?

Our workplace culture is productive yet palpably relaxed and youthful. Everyone is encouraged to contribute original ideas and share their creativity with their co-workers. Our office has skateboards, scooters, a ping pong table, and an entire room full of acoustic guitars. What’s not to love?

5) What is your favorite part of the Challenges?

Working with this year’s group of CD BLOG 3fellows has been an absolute treat. Everyone has such unique skillsets and backgrounds which make our projects feel seamless and well rounded. I am immensely thankful for all of the great friends and colleagues I’ve met so far and I’m looking forward to further strengthening our bond!

6) Tell us about some of things you are involved without side of Challenge Detroit?

I was training for a marathon CD BLOG 2until I tore a ligament in my knee earlier this winter. I have 7 dogs and cats living in my house.  I just started playing drums last year and now am the full time drummer in a power pop band. Getting good enough to record and perform in a year’s time took a lot of practice and dedication. I love everything about music and I always strive to learn more and improve my skills.
