There are four pillars that comprise the life of a Challenge Detroit Fellow: Live. Work. Play. Give.

In my opinion, the giving pillar is the most important pillar of the program! As a Challenge Detroit Fellow I have been able to take part in a variety of activities that are dedicated to giving to the city of Detroit. Whether it is in the form of manpower, creative ideas, research or writing, there have been endless opportunities to give to Detroit in some capacity. The monthly challenges are a time for us to dedicate time to partner non-profit organizations. One of my favorite challenges thus far was working on solutions surrounding food security and economic development in the city. We worked with the United Way of Southeastern Michigan, and at the end of the month delivered short pitches on ways to address these huge issues. I worked with a wonderful team and was able to contribute ideas that were inspired by my international experiences as well!

While the monthly challenges are optimal for learning about the issues Detroit is facing, there have also been opportunities to do community service outside of Fridays. One of my favorite community service events was on Martin Luther King Day when I, along with other fellows and one special fellow’s Mom, spent our morning at Gleaners Food Bank. Before this year, I was not aware that MLK day is the largest day of service in the United States. I was happy to my host company, Urban Science, supported the MLK Day of Service and allowed me to volunteer. I hope to continue the tradition of taking an active part in the MLK Day of Service in Detroit for years to come.

Detroit is truly a city of Do’ers! I am inspired by the people in Detroit who have found a path, which allows them to contribute their talents and work towards a larger cause. I am proud to work with like-minded people who chose to come and stay in Detroit. Time after time I hear stories from colleagues at work as well as friends and family members who have a story to tell about how they are giving in Detroit- or what someone they know is doing. There are extensive ways to get out and give in Detroit. What is your passion? Is it working with kids, animals, the elderly? Is it sharing your knowledge, cleaning up a vacant lot, taking up donations for a cause?
