Read any online article from every “expert” (aka any Joe Schmoe with an opinion.) you would have heard everything that is wrong with Detroit. Oh well they all had their chance to shine; now it’s my turn. Why not? The term “expert” is tossed around looser than Miley Cyrus’s morals, so how come I can’t be an “expert” too. Ok, I am now a self-proclaimed “expert” of Detroit.

Let me clear up the title of this blog, Detroit is not back to its prominent status of yesteryear. But Detroit is back to being relevant. I know you are probably thinking, “He can’t be an “expert” because all the other “experts” says the complete opposite.” You’re right I can’t be an “expert” because all of them are wrong! And that’s cool with me, because the last time that all the “experts” agreed on something they were advocating how subprime mortgages were the best thing since pants with pockets.

Don’t worry allow me to guide you through why Detroit is Back!

1) There is no Amnesty Clause

No longer can the the big wigs in Washington treat Detroit as if this is the NBA and they want to use the Amnesty Clause to get rid them of any financial obligations. With all the negative attention it seemed as if Washington was trying to amnesty Detroit, so that there wouldn’t be a salary cap hit for cutting once beautiful city. But one of the nation’s most popular metropolitans is not going anywhere. This has called for government to create initiatives for the residents, businesses, business leaders, and philanthropist alike to contribute to the city of Detroit. It’s hard for a person not to find a grant or funds that they could use to start a business, continue their education, and buy a house.

2) This is the place of opportunity

Detroit has become a place for everyone who’s someone to invest in.  There has been many contributors to the revitalization efforts of Detroit. From high profiled billionaires to young entrepreneurs, it seems that everyone is seeing Detroit as the American Dream. Everything that you would want to see in an opportunity exists within the city’s limits. If you want to get into real estate there is 139 square miles of land. Ok, real estate isn’t your thing! Detroit is home to some of the best music, food, and entertainment you’ll ever find. You and a few friends want to go experience a live concert well there is an old school concert at The Fillmore. And afterwards you can get a bite to eat at Slows. Not ready to go home yet? Head down to Baker’s Keyboard Lounge and chill out to some live jazz.

3) Numbers don’t lie, but they don’t tell the truth

Everyone loves to talk about how many people have left the city. What about the almost 700,000 that stayed? Detroit is in the top 20 of most populated cities in America. And finished ahead of well-known thriving cities such as Seattle, Boston, and Denver. Why is the focus on Detroit’s population once being 1.8 million? Show some love for it still being one of the most populated cities in the country!

Also I would like to point out that there are people that live in Detroit! There is always a statistics showing the city’s blight. Can we please get one of those national statisticians or “experts” to show the stat of Detroit’s Midtown and Downtown is at 98% occupancy. Could that be because the city is now a destination for more young professionals that would rather live in an apartment or loft? Because when you’re young and single, what need is there for a huge house to keep up with.

4) When the world gives you lemons, invest in agriculture

There are so many places in which there are few people and an abundance of land. While many people would call this blight, Detroiters consider this to be opportunity. With so many square miles not being currently occupied, Detroit has decided to invest in Urban Agriculture. There are over 2000 urban farms and gardens within the city. With the efforts that are being put into urban agriculture, look for Detroit to become one of the healthiest cities in America in the near future.

5) Did I miss something

I did not forget that Detroit has filed Bankruptcy! All that proves is that Detroit is like every other major city in America. No, every other major city is not bankrupt, but they all are and should be considered businesses. And because Detroit is a business they have the assets and opportunity to recover from bankruptcy. It has been done before, just look at Marvel Studios, General Motors, and Chrysler. All three has filed for bankruptcy and is now widely considered to be some of America’s stronger brands in their respective industries.

So maybe I was a little premature to say that, “Detroit is Back!” There is still a ways to go, but how can I not be excited when I see the assets and opportunities that the city possess. Detroit may not be back…who am I kidding? I am, “Sweet on Detroit!”
