Hang around a group of Challenge Detroit fellows on any given Friday and there’s a phrase you’re guaranteed to hear: Design Thinking. It’s the problem-solving methodology we use in our approach to all our team challenges, and it’s completely opened my eyes to the hidden design (both in the physical and processes sense) that goes into so many things we see and interact with on a daily basis.
99% Invisible is a podcast that delves into just this topic, and you can imagine my delight when I stumbled across it last week (side note: I am a podcast fiend and always on the hunt for great new ones to listen to). I haven’t made it through the whole catalog yet, but so far shows have covered everything from the rarest beer in the world to how to warn humans 10,000 years in the future of radioactive materials. These things have nothing to do with what you may traditionally consider design (like graphic or product design), yet the design is there- just hidden to the untrained eye.
If you’re interested in learning more about design thinking, the thought and care that go into creating so many things and processes we interact with on a daily basis, or just love listening to interesting people talk about interesting things while you make your coffee in the morning, I HIGHLY recommend checking out 99% Invisible.

P.S. If you’re really as much of a nerd as I am, check out the comment sections on each show- so much great discussion!
