To this day, I still have a hard time putting in words my experience at AT&T’s 28 Days, which took place in late February. I have always wanted to attend this Black History month series because it seemed so interesting. My dream of attending this event finally came true because the tour made a stop in Detroit!  I was very surprised when I found out that this event was free; I always assumed in order to attend an amazing event like this, you would have to pay. Nonetheless, my roommate and I, Asia Gholston (another Challenge Detroit fellow), attended the event. At the event there were three main entertainers – Rickey Smiley a comedian, Jeff Johnson a motivational speaker, and Elle Varner the singer. Rickey Smiley was hilarious; the jokes kept on coming all night long. Who would have thought a comedian could have good material that was nice, clean and fun? After Rickey was done getting everyone to laugh to their hearts’ content, Jeff Johnson was next. Jeff’s message delivery was nothing short of perfect. He spoke about uplifting the Detroit community and utilizing the many skills that could already be found right here in Detroit. His knowledge on African – American history was phenomenal! I truly believe that he could leave anyone in awe and wanting to hear more, just from his words and knowledge. If Jeff Johnson was involved in another speaker series I would go in a heartbeat. Jeff just leaves you in good spirits and wanting to make a change in your life immediately. Finally, Elle Varner was the singing entertainment portion of the event. If you have heard her music before, you would know that she is talented. I also think she is ten thousand times better in a live performance. She mixed some old school with some new school and had a personal beat boxer originally from the Bronx, NY (which was really cool). The beat boxer carried a variety of beats for the whole performance which was probably about 20 minutes long (amazing!). Next year if you have a chance to go do it! It’s a grand event you don’t want to miss.
