So I’ve never been a big fan of New Years Resolutions. I’m one of those people who thinks: “ I should be doing what I want to do all the time! Why wait until the New Year?”
Well this year is going to be a little different. As the second half of my year with Challenge Detroit commences, I’ve begun to reflect on my time thus far. I’m reminded of the progress I’ve made, but the things I’d like to accomplish going forward. In getting acclimated to a new city and work environment its easy to neglect some of the things you may have set out to do. But it’s never too late! A new day means new opportunities and so does a new year! Its a fresh slate. So I’ve decided to compile a short bucket list (if that’s what you’d like to call it) for my remaining time in Challenge Detroit.
Here’s what I’d like to accomplish during “A New Year in the D:”
- Visit more of Detroit’s historic places. I’ve already been to Motown and Bakers Lounge on Livernois Avenue, but I’ve yet to go to the Charles Wright Museum, DIA, or even the Fisher Building!
- Attend a show at the Detroit Opera House, Fox Theatre etc.
- Attend a local community meeting to learn more about Detroit. As someone who lives and works downtown, I want to learn more about Detroit’s historic neighborhoods I.e. Boston Edison, Brightmoor and Grandmont Rosedale. What better way to learn about Detroit than attending a meeting in the community of those trying to make Detroit an even better place!
- This one is BIG for me, and something that I love to do: start doing more community service. Get teamed up with a local organization to mentor a young girl in Detroit once a week. I was given an organization to contact about this, but need to follow up! Well, it’s a New Year so I’m going to do it!
This list is small, and may not be inclusive of what I’d like to accomplish or will accomplish in the New Year, but they are the things that I have deemed the most important. Often times when listing goals, we write a laundry list of things rather than pinpointing those that we could actually see ourselves accomplishing, and things that would better us as a person. For instance, I’m not a big museum or artsy person, so taking in more of Detroit’s cultural side will help me garner an even deeper appreciation for the city. Education, mentoring and community development are my passions, so tapping into that as I learn more about the city is a great way for me to continue to learn and grown.
For those Detroiters reading this, what would you like to accomplish in the D? Write them down and share! Your personal goals may help someone else, and spark a catalyst for positive change. Here’s to a New Year in the D!
