It’s almost here people….it’s almost here.
Despite Mother Nature’s best attempts to make it seem otherwise, summer is almost here…and if any city deserves this change in season, it’s Detroit. In a year where we saw the record set for most snowfall, and when you consider that Detroit was widely recognized as the city that experienced the harshest winter, summer can’t come soon enough. Winter was fun for a while. Skating in Campus Martius, the Christmas tree lighting, Winter Blast…..those were all great things and I thank you, Detroit, for putting them on. But you know what wasn’t great? Snow in the middle of April. Fear not, people, summer in Detroit is upon us. To celebrate (and encourage Mother Nature to accelerate the transition), here are the four things I am most looking forward to in Detroit this summer:
- Detroit Tiger Baseball: Don’t act like you’re surprised….you knew this would be number one on the list. Anyone who knows me knows that the Tigers have my full attention each and every summer. What’s special about this summer, though, is that for the first time I live mere steps from Comerica Park. And like an opposing hitter facing a hanging breaking ball from Phil Coke, I plan to take full advantage.
- Eastern Market: Eastern Market is great any time of the year, but in the summer it really comes to life. As someone who has, over the past few months, begun seriously honing his cooking skills (hope you’re reading this, mom), Eastern Market has been an absolute mecca. That will definitely continue into the summer.
- The Riverfront: For my money, the Riverfront is the most underrated place in all of Detroit. The snow might have made you temporarily forget it was there, but the Riverfront boasts some of the best summer fun in the city. Walking and biking, sand volleyball, Segway tours, ArtScape, River Days….there really is something for everyone.
- 2014 Downtown Hoedown: I might be a bit biased, given that I work for the radio station that puts this on, but I’ve never been to the Downtown Hoedown before and I cannot wait! More than 100,000 people will funnel through the areas outside of Comerica Park to listen to over 40 different country artists. Make sure you’re one of them. Who’s coming? The Band Perry, Big & Rich, Dierks Bentley, Chris Young, Kellie Pickler……are you convinced yet??
Winter is over, people! Time to think about what you want to come and experience in Detroit this summer. I’ve given you a couple of places to start….but don’t be lazy. There are plenty of other events, festivals, bars, shows, performances, and restaurants to explore. Make this summer a Detroit summer…you won’t regret it.
Until next time,
Max
