January was an eventful month. Every month has been since moving to Detroit, but this one so much so that I’ve forgotten to blog until 2 hours before the deadline! Sorry, Deirdre, Shelley, and my snowflaky Midtown princess turned loyal peer editor at midnight Lyse Cook. At a loss for inspiration and drained from karate chopping the achievement gap all week, I typed “awesome blog post ideas” into Google en español and out came: make a top 10 list.
So here’s a top 10 from my event-full January, probably not in order of eventfulness:
1) Went to Barcelona. Fell so in love with that place that I bought a shot glass that says “I <3 Barcelona".
2) Went to Madrid. Is it cheating to make this a separate event on my list?
3) Went to Toronto. It was -3 degrees, but gosh darn are the Canadians friendly!
4) Joined a YMCA basketball league. They let me name the team… The Teddy Bears are currently 1-1.
5) Cultured my fellow fellows with a Día de los Tres Reyes party. My classroom behavior management skills were at an all-time low. I now have zero friends on my floor.
6) Tested a location for our first gluten free MeetUp in Detroit. Two out of the three of us left our work session with gluten poisoning. Scratched that one off the list.
7) Got a fitbit. It has successfully shamed me into taking the eleven flights of stairs to my apartment and every time I try to cheat, my neighbors call me out on it and I end up taking the elevator back the way I came.
8) The Walking Dead is still not back. My Monday post-tutoring dinner and zombies with Alexandra is slowly turning into dinner and drinks and philosophizing. The latter two somehow go well together.
9) I committed to help my barber, Darnell, get his relationship coaching workshops off the ground by stepping up his digital marketing presence. He’s like a real-life Hitch, and somehow an even fresher prince.
10) Assisted in the surveying (and hopefully the preservation) of 19,000 historical parcels of land in Detroit.
Encore, you say? 11) I’m a co-project manager for our homelessness challenge. As if eight-to-five, Monday through Thursday with Macro wasn’t busy enough!
Another one? Fine. 12) My boss and I brewed a batch of hard cider. The first of many to come, soon to be sold at a restaurant, grocery store, and/or sporting event near you.
That’s all you get. Until next month, family, friends, and spammers commenting on my posts from abroad.
