Much like the rest of the country, Detroiters have been buried under inches of snow and facing brutal temperatures as a result of 2014’s polar vortex for the past several weeks. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the wintertime blues, retreat into your bed and hideout under the covers, but I suggest that instead, those living in and near the Motor City turn the table on the cold weather blahs by checking out some of these Detroit landmarks while trying to keep out of the cold. Sure, it may be a chilly commute to get there, but trust me – all of them are worth it.

If you haven’t been already or even if you haven’t been in awhile – you must visit Detroit’s Main Library. It’s beautiful, quiet and very close to a bunch of great restaurants and midtown shops that you can browse through after you’ve warmed up with a good book.

While you’re in the area, you might as well head across the street and check out the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). If you happen to stop by on a Friday you can catch Friday Night Live, a collection of live music, workshops, guided tours and more, all included in the price of museum admission from 6p-10p.

Another great cultural spot is the Charles H. Wright Museum, “the world’s largest institution dedicated to the African American experience”. No matter what your color or ethnicity, this place is not to be missed, with its host of awesome exhibits, artifacts and guided tours, it’s guaranteed to get you thinking and reflecting upon the lives of black people in America throughout history.

Once you’ve stimulated your intellectual senses, be certain to head to Baker’s Keyboard Lounge to let your hair down and relax to the sounds of some traditional jazz at the “world’s oldest jazz club”. Opened in 1933, Baker’s is not only famous for its music, but also it’s delicious soul food meals, from fried chicken to BBQ ribs, smothered pork chops, and the list goes on… My personal favorite is the catfish dinner with macaroni & cheese and yams 🙂

Lastly, for all those of the “if you can’t beat’em, join’em” mindset, you may prefer to confront the cold head on at the Motor City Winter Blast at Campus Martius in Downtown Detroit. This attraction will only be in town from February 7-9, so make sure you put it on your calendar so as not to miss the 200 ft. snow slide, free ice skating and snowshoeing, “Taste of Detroit” food samplings from local restaurants and a variety of local performers. Don’t fret if the weather turns too frigid, you can always warm up in one of five Comfort Zones located at strategic points around the event to keep guests warm, then pop out to enjoy a marshmallow roast or watch a dog sledding exhibition. Yep, fun times in the D!

So before you jump off the Belle Isle Bridge to numb yourself to the miserable winter, or pack up the car for a day’s long trip to Miami, consider visiting these Detroit hot spots to keep your disposition sunny even when the weather isn’t as bright!
