It’s that time of year again; after eating a few too many Christmas cookies and drinking one too many seasonal brews, it’s time for my 2015 resolutions. Instead of copying and pasting my same resolutions from past 4 years about cutting calories and better budgeting, I’ll share a few of my Detroit-focused resolutions here (and you all can hold me accountable).

1. Go to Eastern Market at least twice a month.

In the winter months it’s pretty tough. It’s cold and snowy and if this winter is anything like last winter, the last thing I want to do on Saturday morning is bundle up and head outside. But in all honesty, the quality and prices at Eastern Market can’t be beat. This year I will make an effort to get there at least every other week. (And maybe I’ll still sleep in and go at the end of the day when the sun has been shining a bit longer and the prices have dropped.)

2. Try a new place once a week

There are so many places opening up around the city. It’s easy to stay in my six block radius and just frequent the restaurants, stores and bars I can walk to. Yet I can’t deny the many places around the city that are opening up or that I have yet to visit. Some things on my hit-list for January and February include Punch Bowl Social (obviously), Selden Standard, Craft Work, 1917 American Bistro, Detroit Vegan Soul and UFO Factory. Oh, and my once a week quota will be met by visiting coffee shops, grocery stories, or small shops, not just bars and restaurants.

3. Get involved in the arts scene.

I want to get to MOCAD, the DIA, open mics, the Red Bull House of Art, Wayne State performances, the Opera House, and participate in Third Thursdays. I have only minimally dabbled in these scene but I am always pleased when I do. I hope to use more weeknights for experiences like these.

4. Read more.

This one isn’t necessarily Detroit-focused, but it can be. There are so many books that have been on my radar but I have not read because I “haven’t had time.” I think it’s time I replace some TV hours with reading. First on my list is “Arc of Justice” which has been sitting on my bookshelf for two years now.

Happy 2015 everyone!
