Well, it’s here once again…that time where we sit down and reflect on all of the wonderful (and not so wonderful) things we did in the past year and determine the things we want to do in the new one. New Year’s Resolutions are difficult because they are often too general and lack tangible goals. Therefore, instead of crafting one or two big New Year’s Resolutions this year, why not come up with a list of truly actionable goals, big or small, that you want to successfully complete in 2014? Better yet, how about finding a way to work Detroit into your plans for the year ahead? This year, instead of watching, listening, or reading about the city, get out there and experience it! Detroit is ready and waiting to be part of your 2014, so here are a couple of ideas of ways you might make it happen:

Taste the melting pot of flavors that is Detroit’s restaurant scene

Dining in Detroit doesn’t just mean Coney Dogs and Buddy’s Pizza (though both of those things are great and well worth a trip). Variety is the name of the game when it comes to the dining scene here. There truly is something for everyone and you can make it as classy or as casual as you like. If you’re feeling a bit fancy you have to try Michael Symon’s Roast, located on the ground floor of the Westin Book Cadillac. Stop in for after dinner drinks at the cozy, comfortable bar, or treat yourself to dinner with some of the best steaks and chops in the city. Roast was just recognized by Hour Detroit for having the best happy hour in town. Try the bone marrow appetizer and thank me later. Joe Muer Seafood and Coach Insignia are perfect alternatives for those looking to celebrate with great seafood or an incredible view respectively. Of course, you don’t have to drop significant dough to have a good meal in Detroit. Green Dot Stables is a Detroit destination (and fellow favorite!) thanks to delicious sliders and fries at even tastier prices. And no, beer bro, Detroit hasn’t forgotten about you. Hit up either Motor City Brewing Works or Detroit Beer Company to quench your thirst with some of the best brew in the city. No matter how you slice it, there are plenty of ways to get full on Detroit dining destinations in 2014!

Help make Detroit a better place for us all by donating some time to a local charity

Does it frustrate you when you turn on a television program or open an article about Detroit and all you see are pictures of abandoned houses and crumbling buildings? This year, do something about it by giving some of your time to Motor City Blight Busters, a group that for 22 years has been combating ruin porn by rehabilitating the blight in Detroit. Since its founding, Bligh Busters has renovated, secured, or outright demolished more than 600 structures in the city and constructed more than 100 new ones. 2014 is the perfect year to step up and (literally) help make the face of Detroit more beautiful. Buildings aren’t the only things that need assistance, though. There are plenty of Detroiters who themselves will need a helping hand in 2014. Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) has been helping the citizens of Detroit through hard times by offering housing and other services since opening its doors in 1982 (and is also a year 2 Challenge partner!). Additionally, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan is always accepting volunteers interested in combating hunger in the great Detroit region. 2014 is the perfect time to volunteer to sort and pack food for Gleaners to distribute across the area!

Have a night on the town at one of Detroit’s many recognizable entertainment venues

One of the benefits of a city as culturally rich as Detroit is the variety of entertainment destinations it offers. The music aficionado in all of us would love to take in a show at The Fillmore Detroit. With a capacity of 2,200, The Fillmore boasts a line-up that features something for everyone. In early 2014 alone it will host the likes of Umphrey’s  McGee, Jamey Johnson, Dropkick Murphys, and The Wanted. But, if The Fillmore doesn’t quite have what you are looking for, head next door to the iconic Fox Theatre for concerts and family shows alike. Variety is the name of the game and 2014 includes everything from STOMP and Robin Thicke to Sesame Street Live and Bring It On: The Musical. If you prefer something a bit more classical, then a concert at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra should definitely be on your list. There is seemingly always something going on at the DSO and a concert series subscription is definitely a worthwhile investment. No matter how you like to be entertained, Detroit can be your destination…and 2014 is the year to make it happen!

Go ahead and make 2014 the year that you finally lose those 15 extra pounds, spend more time with your family, and finish cleaning out the garage. But also remember that 2014 is a huge year for the city of Detroit. There is positive change happening around every corner, thanks to the commitment of Detroiters to making their city a better place to live, work, play, give, and lead. This year, be sure to come check it out for yourself.

Until next time,

Max
