Challenge Detroit’s most gleaners logorecent service activity was for Gleaners, a Community Food Bank that has been serving South Eastern Michigan for 36 years. Challenge Detroit Fellows spent an afternoon folding plastic bags for their annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign.

Gleaners2Each year, Gleaners sends out a request to their donors to participate in a food drive for the National Letter Carriers Association. Several years ago, Gleaners began attaching plastic grocery bags to their usual postcard reminders and found that the amount of food donated increased dramatically. Last year, the campaign generated 1 million pounds of donated food!

Gleaners

This year, Kroger donated over 600,000 plastic grocery bags to be sent out to donors and the Challenge Detroit Fellows committed to folding one box of bags (2,000 bags). The fellows spent an afternoon in a space generously donated by United Way of South Eastern Michigan enjoying food and music, some excellent company and making a difference for the greater Detroit community!
