Over the last 8 months I’ve had the pleasure of working with the team responsible for putting together the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, one of the region’s premier annual sporting events. It was an event that I had attended in the past as a spectator, but knew little about.

Prior to joining the team I had no idea the race and all that goes into it required year round planning, but I quickly found out why. The undertaking was much larger than I had ever imagined. Careful planning and review took place at every step to ensure a fun, successful, and safe event. Countless amounts of volunteers both young and old worked tirelessly to promote the Grand Prix at various events through the region.

I was also unaware of the improvements done to the Island as a result of the race. Drainage systems were completely redone to prevent grassy areas from flooding, sidewalks were put in, playgrounds added, and large stretches of road were redone. The Grand Prix also played a role, along with other fantastic local partners, in repairs done to the lighting on the MacArthur Bridge (switching it to working, LED lighting), as well as the restoration of the Scott Fountain.

I never imagined leaving a month out from the race but that’s exactly where I am today. I should note I am leaving to complete my fellowship with the parent company of the Detroit Grand Prix: The Downtown Detroit Partnership, a move that my GM and Director at the DGP helped facilitate. I am thankful for the opportunity to dive deeper into the world of Community Engagement and am excited to be working with the DDP on some of the fantastic initiatives they are involved in.

I’m looking forward to participating in many of the things I worked on during my 8 months, as a spectator: The Grand Prix edition of Slow Roll, Greektown at Sundown, and of course being there on race weekend taking it all in.
